Coursework Studies Section

Previous Macquarie Students (Undergraduate)

Applications for Session 2 2012 are now open and will close 8 June 2012. No late applications will be accepted.

If you are a Previous Macquarie Student who wants to return to Macquarie University, you are eligible to re-apply directly to the university if you

  • are a previous Macquarie University student who has enrolled in an undergraduate course;
  • are returning to the same undergraduate course;
  • have not undertaken any intervening tertiary studies* elsewhere;
  • have a recorded result in at least one unit of your incomplete qualification.

* Tertiary studies include TAFE courses at Certificate IV level or higher, but not secretarial or trade courses. If you are not sure whether your tertiary studies would affect your application please contact the Coursework Studies Section by phone on (02) 9850 6410 or by clicking 'Contact Us' on the left side of this screen and submitting an online enquiry.

If you do not satisfy all of the requirements above you must apply directly to the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) where your qualifications will be re-assessed. To check what courses are offered by Macquarie University you may consult the Universities Admissions Centre Guide.

The University introduced a new curriculum in January 2010 and, as a returning student to your incomplete degree, you will be automatically enrolled into the new curriculum.

How the new curriculum will help you

The new curriculum will broaden your experience and help you develop greater expertise in your field of interest, with more flexibility within the programs of study. There will be a system of majors and minors to make it easier for you to specialise and manage your own degree. You’ll also have the chance to study outside your own Department and Faculty through the new People and Planet units.

More information

We have created a series of online resources to assist current and returning students.  On our web site you will be able to find more information on the changes to the curriculum, a list of frequently asked questions, and links to other useful sites with more details specific to your course. Please visit here to find out more.  You can also email us at newcurriculum@mq.edu.au, or contact your academic department directly to see how the changes will affect you and your degree.

Application Procedures

Applications for Session 2 2012 are now open and will close 8 June 2012. No late applications will be accepted.

How to apply:

  1. Check the online Undergraduate Handbook http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/2011/DegreesDiplomas/UGDegrees to find out whether your course is available under the new Curriculum (please consult the 2011 Handbook until the 2012 Handbook becomes available in September 2011). Some courses have been phased out. If your course has been phased out (i.e. is not among the courses available according to the current Handbook), you may be offered a similar course available under the new Curriculum.
  2. Contact your Faculty (or consult the Handbook) to find out the differences between the requirements of the new curriculum course and the one you were enrolled in previously, before your break from study. In order to graduate, you will need to fulfil the requirments of the new curriculum course.
  3. Complete the on-line application form. Remember to check the information below to see whether you are in a special category that requires the submission of additional material for the Ranking Committee.
  4. If relevant to you, print out a Cover Sheet - complete details, attach any relevant documentation and then submit. Please note: you do not need to submit a Macquarie transcript to request credit for previous studies.

Points to Note

  • If you were in a Domestic Fee Paying place before taking a break from study, you should complete the online application above to seek re-admission to a Domestic Fee Paying place. However, you may additionally wish to apply for a Commonwealth Supported place (which will considerably reduce your fees). In order to do so you will need to lodge an application for the couse through UAC www.uac.edu.au and compete with other applicants for a Commonwealth Supported place. Please consult UAC's website to determine whether your course is offered midyear. If it is not, you may contact Macquarie University on (02) 9850 6410 to discuss your options. If the University sends you a letter of offer for the Domestic Fee Paying place and you have also made an application to UAC, please do not accept the University's offer unless UAC has advised your application for a Commonwealth Supported place was unsuccessful.
  • If you have changed your name since your last enrolment at Macquarie University, please make sure that you complete the box for "previous family name" with the name under which you were last enrolled. You MUST also present documentary evidence of the change (copy of marriage certificate, deed poll, statutory declaration or the like).
  • The only degrees that are offered fully external are the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) and Bachelor of Laws. If you nominate external study and your degree is not offered by distance you will be required to enrol in the internal degree. Some units of an internal degree may be offered by distance education.

    If you wish to graduate with a particular named degree, you may apply to transfer internally to that degree. For full details on internal course/degree transfer click here. Alternatively, if you satisfy the requirements for a particular named degree, you are eligible to graduate with that degree. You should contact the Academic Program Section on (02) 9850 6497 for further information.
  • EXCLUDED STUDENTS, if you were previously enrolled at Macquarie University and you were excluded for:
    a) taking an unduly long time to complete your degree,
    b) minimum rate of progress, or
    c) double failure in a required Law unit or double failure in a unit offered by the Faculty of Human Sciences because you failed the practicum component of that unit (please see the 2011 Handbook of Undergraduate Studies pages 433-444 for details)
    readmission is not automatic after your period of exclusion has expired. Your case will need to be considered by the Ranking Committee of the Coursework Studies Committee and you will need to supply documents to support your case for re-admission. Such documents should provide evidence to indicate that your circumstances have improved substantially since you were enrolled and that you would now have a reasonable chance of succeeding in your studies if you were re-admitted. If you do not provide such documentation, your application will not be considered. If your period of exclusion has not yet expired, please do not submit an application for re-admission but contact the Academic Programs Section at apsinfo@mq.edu.au if you have questions about appealing your exclusion.

  • Please read the declaration carefully before you submit your application for re-admission.
